The New York Rangers overcame a second-period deficit to defeat the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 at Madison Square Garden on Thursday, capitalizing on late third-period opportunities to secure the victory. The loss drops the Flyers to a 4-10-4 record as they begin a five-game road trip.

New York established an early advantage when Tye Kartye’s forecheck forced a turnover by Flyers defenseman Oliver Bonk. Marcus Pettersson’s shot from the point was deflected by J.T. Miller and Gabe Perreault in front of the net, giving the Rangers a 1-0 lead at 4:39 of the first period.

Philadelphia responded during the middle of the second period with two quick goals. Simon Benoit scored his first goal since March 10, 2025, beating Rangers goaltender Dylan Garand with a slap shot from the left point at 10:10. Two minutes later, Noel Acciari put Philadelphia ahead 2-1. Denver Barkey picked up a rebound after a Jamie Drysdale shot was blocked, turned, and fed Acciari, who tipped it in.

The Rangers had not won a game this season when trailing after two periods, according to NHL.com. That trend ended when Barkey was called for slashing at 13:13 of the third period. Pavel Dorofeyev tied the game from the right faceoff circle 39 seconds later. Adam Fox then sent a long pass up ice that put Kartye in alone for a shot over Joseph Woll’s glove at 15:21.

Flyers coach Rick Tocchet expressed frustration with how the tying and winning goals occurred through the middle of the ice. "When you’re up 2-1 you got to protect the interior of the ice," Tocchet said. "For whatever reason, when pressure hits us, we forget that. That’s just Hockey 101 for me."

Defenseman Travis Sanheim pointed to turnovers as a key factor. "We need to keep it simple, not turn over pucks and give them chances that they don’t deserve," Sanheim said. "We gave them some looks, and then they get a power play and capitalize, and make us pay."

Rangers captain J.T. Miller admitted his team was not sharp early in the game. "I don’t think we had our best stuff today in the first and second periods," Miller said. Kartye kept his explanation for the winning goal brief: "Just do my job, honestly."

The Rangers outshot the Flyers 28-25. Philadelphia won 25 of 45 faceoffs and went 0-for-1 on the power play, while New York converted one of two opportunities. Garand, playing his 12th straight game, finished with a 6-6-1 record for the season.

The Flyers have lost five of their last six games (1-4-1) and sit last in the Eastern Conference. Drysdale’s assist extended his point streak to three games, while Fox now has 21 points in 17 games. The road trip continues in Calgary on Sunday night, marking the start of a three-game swing through western Canada.
