French National Rally president Jordan Bardella clashed with journalist Gilles Bouleau during a Tuesday night broadcast of TF1’s Le Journal. The confrontation centered on allegations of past antisemitic remarks, with Bardella denying the claims and accusing the media outlet of a destabilization campaign while defending his record on combating hate speech.
French National Rally (RN) president Jordan Bardella engaged in a heated confrontation with journalist Gilles Bouleau during the November 3 broadcast of TF1’s Le Journal. The exchange, which occurred while Bardella was promoting his new book on governance, shifted abruptly when Bouleau raised allegations of past antisemitic messages attributed to Bardella by the investigative outlet Mediapart.
Bouleau noted that Bardella had added three pages to his book addressing claims regarding comments he allegedly made at age 17. The journalist urged Bardella to seek a direct court ruling to clear his name, suggesting a resolution could be reached within two to three months.
Bardella rejected this timeline, arguing that legal proceedings do not guarantee speed. He stated he had already filed lawsuits for defamation and forgery against Mediapart. "I have no lesson to receive on the subject of the fight against antisemitism," Bardella said, raising his voice as he addressed Bouleau.
When asked why he did not publish his 2013 Facebook messages to dispel doubts, Bardella claimed he no longer possessed the account and turned the question back to the journalist. He accused Mediapart of conducting a "destabilization operation" against the RN. Mediapart maintains it has authenticated the exchanges, while Bardella continues to deny their authenticity.
To defend his record, Bardella cited his 2025 invitation to an international conference against antisemitism in Israel and his participation in a demonstration supporting French Jews following the October 7 attacks. He contrasted his presence at the event with that of President Emmanuel Macron, asserting his commitment to protecting all French citizens from Islamist threats.
The confrontation took place shortly after Bardella was reconfirmed as RN president. The allegations remain unresolved, with the political and media narratives directly contradicting each other regarding the origin and meaning of the digital records.
