Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that at least 33 people were killed and more than 50 remain missing after a Russian airstrike hit the village of Komyshuvakha in the Saporizhzhia region. Speaking during a visit to Berlin on Tuesday, Zelenskyy described the incident as one of the largest massacres committed by Russian forces since the start of the war.
The attack occurred on Monday, approximately 15 kilometers from the front line. Zelenskyy stated that the strike targeted a school being used for humanitarian purposes, where aid was distributed every Monday. The bombing hit just as people were arriving to receive assistance. A second airstrike then targeted a shelter where survivors had sought refuge.
"One single attack killed 33 people," Zelenskyy said. "Five people were rescued, and over 50 are likely still trapped under the rubble." Ukrainian officials fear the death toll could rise as rescue operations continue in the debris.
Zelenskyy delivered these remarks while attending an international security conference in Berlin. He met with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and President Frank-Walter Steinmeier during the visit. Addressing the conference, Zelenskyy warned against the potential resurgence of pro-Russian political parties in Germany and across Europe.
He emphasized that Ukraine "would not have survived without Germany and other European countries." However, he questioned the stability of the European security architecture if nations like Germany and France were to be governed by Kremlin-friendly parties.
