Louisiana's visit to USC offers an early test of coach Michael Desormeaux's decision to build primarily through recruiting and player development. The Ragin' Cajuns brought in five transfers for 2026, down from seven the previous year, rather than undertaking a large-scale roster replacement.

The program, based in Lafayette, draws on a region with substantial football talent. Desormeaux is relying on that recruiting base and the experience younger players gained last season to improve on a 6-7 record.

Louisiana qualified for a bowl in that campaign after a midseason quarterback change helped stabilize its results. Lunch Winfield, from Lutcher, Louisiana, became the starter and eventually led a four-game winning streak that brought the team to 6-6 before the bowl.

Winfield showed promise as both a passer and runner, although his development included uneven performances. His ability to produce more consistently is central to Louisiana's prospects, particularly with questions remaining about the defense.

USC entered the matchup as a 30.5-point favorite. The Trojans had shown contrasting defensive performances over their opening two games, providing the main point of discussion in Michael Leboff's New York Post preview.

Against San Jose State, USC held a 35-3 advantage before allowing 23 fourth-quarter points. It responded in Week 1 by beating Fresno State 39-0 and restricting the Bulldogs to 116 yards of total offense.

Leboff argued that the shutout should be considered in context. Fresno State quarterback Jayden Mandal was making his first career start in a difficult road setting, and the columnist viewed that offense as less capable of testing USC than its overall team strength might suggest.

His assessment was that Louisiana and Winfield could present a different challenge. That remained a forecast rather than an established result, with USC's defense coming off a game in which it had prevented its opponent from scoring at all.

Louisiana's own defense also faced a demanding task against USC's offense. Leboff said experience gained during the previous season could help the unit, but he did not expect it to contain the Trojans consistently.

The preview also considered USC's upcoming schedule. Lincoln Riley's team is due to travel across the country to Rutgers in Week 3, then return home to face Oregon the following Saturday.

Leboff expected those commitments to influence Riley's second-half personnel decisions against Louisiana. He suggested that greater rotation could give Winfield and the Ragin' Cajuns an opportunity to remain within the large point spread even if USC controlled the game.

The columnist's published selection was Louisiana plus 30.5 at DraftKings odds of minus 102. It was a choice against the spread, rather than a prediction that Louisiana would win outright.

The selection appeared in Leboff's Ugly Underdogs series. He noted that the series had backed New Mexico State successfully in Week 0, followed by an unsuccessful Northern Illinois selection against Iowa in Week 1.

The Saturday game therefore brings together two separate assessments: whether Louisiana's returning roster can progress under Desormeaux's development strategy, and whether USC can repeat the defensive performance it produced against Fresno State while managing the schedule ahead.
