Utah hosts Arkansas as both programs begin seasons under new coaches

Arkansas visits Utah in Salt Lake City after both teams won their season openers under new head coaches. Utah entered the Week 2 matchup as a 12.5-point favorite following a 66-14 victory over Idaho.

Utah takes a more emphatic opening result and two additional days of rest into its home game against Arkansas at Rice-Eccles Stadium. The Utes beat Idaho 66-14 in Week 1, while the Razorbacks began Ryan Silverfield's tenure with a 31-14 win over North Alabama.

Both teams are adjusting to new leadership. Silverfield arrived in Fayetteville from Memphis and used the transfer portal extensively to address gaps in Arkansas' roster. Morgan Scalley took over Utah after Kyle Whittingham's 21 years in charge.

Arkansas' opening win came without a sustained offensive performance, according to Michael Leboff's New York Post preview. The Razorbacks were not seriously threatened by North Alabama but did not establish the consistency the columnist wanted to see before a road game against stronger opposition.

The program has not won more than four Southeastern Conference games in a season for 10 years. Its last campaign with 10 overall victories was in 2011. Leboff argued that, despite financial support associated with Walmart, Arkansas needs better results to compete more effectively for recruits against leading SEC programs.

Silverfield's transfers represent an early attempt to close those gaps, but their overall effect remains to be established. The trip to Salt Lake City also provides another assessment of Arkansas quarterback KJ Jackson, whose performance at this level remains comparatively unproven.

Utah's quarterback Devon Dampier offers a more established record. The former New Mexico player threw for 2,495 yards and 24 touchdowns, with five interceptions, last season. He also scored 10 rushing touchdowns despite dealing with injuries.

Leboff viewed Dampier's ability to contribute as both passer and runner as a central advantage for Utah, provided he remains healthy. He also assessed the roster Scalley inherited as stronger than the one Silverfield took over.

The published betting line made Arkansas a 12.5-point underdog. Leboff's selection was Utah minus 12.5 at DraftKings odds of minus 110, based on the teams' opening performances, quarterback situations and Utah's home and rest advantages.

That selection was the columnist's pregame judgment, not an account of the result. The preview was published before the Saturday matchup.
